The Cause of their Smiles

Written by: Klaradelle Sol Villamayor

Did you know that our bodies use 5 to 53 muscles for just one smile? It is one fact that makes us believe that for one simple action, there are many efforts to be done. For one, it takes a lot of hard work to help one stand out in a crowd and also it takes one mission to complete a task of many.  In the recent years, some organizations and projects are sprouting in our country that is dedicated to render service to the mass. There is one organization that strives to aid people, especially children, into completing the smile on their faces. Operation Smile is one non-profit organization in the world, with one branch in our country (Operation Smile Philippines) that does that free reconstructive surgery to children with cleft-palate facial deformities, caring for the smile of the future generation.

With that inspiration, the United Architects of the Philippines – Manila Chapter Atelier in collaboration with the United Architects of the Philippines – Student Auxiliary – University of Santo Tomas Chapter and Red Cross Youth Council – UST Architecture Unit begins with a step to answer a call of children in need by running for their smiles. UAPSAbay Takbo: I Run to Make Smiles, a fun run event for the benefit of Operation Smile Philippines, was held in the city of Marikina last March 11, 2012.

Early in a Sunday morning people started to crowd the plaza in front of Marikina City Hall, the venue of the fun run, lining up to claim their fun run kits and for on-site registration while waiting for the event to begin. The event started at almost quarter to 6 in the morning with the singing of the National Anthem, the program opening remarks and prayer and of course a warm-up exercise for the participants to get pumped. The event includes a 3k, 5k and 10k distances where the participants in the 10k opened up the race and the other distance followed.

With the support of the City Government of Marikina, the event was a success. Before the event closes, there held an awarding for the winners of the race, three winners per distance. After the announcing of the winners, the closing remarks were given by the representative from Operation Smile and Arch. Henry Herrera, uap, UAP- Manila Chapter Atelier Incoming President.

UAPSAbay Takbo: I Run to Make Smiles will truly help the children to infect smiles to people all around the world.

Bare-It-All 7.1: Daphne Oseña-Paez

Written by: Angelica F. Perez

It was hard to determine the more legitimate reason why students have swarmed themselves in the Beato Angelico AVR last March 8, 2012. Surely, one can gain a lot of insights from all the seminars arranged by the United Architects of the Philippines – Student Auxiliary – University of Santo Tomas (UAPSA-UST) Chapter. But for the next forum, it was an opportunity not to be missed, simply because gracing the event would be renowned TV host, producer and businesswoman, Daphne Oseña-Paez.

All eyes are glued as this lusciously youthful mother walks up the stage and wittily talks of how her life came to be. Although at present she is well distinguished in the industry, everything was not just laid to her on the table.

Daphne was once a frustrated architect, and though ironically a math geek, it was just calculus that beleaguered her from pursuing the course. Instead, she got her degree in Fine Art history and Urban Planning from the University of Toronto in Canada. Contrary to her parents’ desire, she moved back to the Philippines and from here she worked her way on television when she was discovered by ABS-CBN in 1996. She began as a reporter but being too polished to be suitable for news journalism; her career was diverted back to where she’s really made for. It may be a tough climb but her smoldering passion and perseverance, with just a tad bit of luck, helped her push it all the way to where she is at present.

Her very own show, Urban Zone, is perhaps the brainchild of her zeal and years of hard slog. It gives spotlight to some of the country’s most chic and stunning abode, even featuring that of our own college faculty’s Archt. Gene Flancha. Urbanzone inspires a lot of viewers to build a sensational living of their own. The show is more oriented to the contemporary style, though when Daphne herself was asked of her own preference, she chose the very quaint and refined Bahay-na-Bato that her house actually takes onto.

Though she practically has the power and influence in her line, Daphne is but wise to refuse on some opportunities. She stands for things she believe are more important and inimitable- her family. A model inside out, Daphne also advocates for children and motherhood. Daphne now juggles her time designing jewelries and furnitures, TV hosting, blogging, and of course giving quality time to raise her three beautiful daughters.

If there’s one thing that could define her style, it would be of bona fide quality rather than embracing more but compromising its value. True enough, her works and TV show can only be outstanding and inspiring, while she never misses out her role on being a wife and a mother.

The 101 in CAD

Written by: Philip Jon Lewis

On the fifth of March 2012, the student auxiliary of the United Architects of The Philippines, UST chapter held and event entitled “CAD 101 : Tips and Techniques”.  The guest speaker was Architect Brian Ernest Regalado; General Manager of expedient cad services (one of the premier providers of cad solutions in the metro).

Not only did the speaker enlighten the audience with the basics and foundations of designing with CAD systems, he also gave a summary of BIM (building Image Modeling), a more advanced form of Computer Aided Design.  He also introduced us to the products that he was affiliated with such as Gstar Cad and its rendering system, ARTLANTIS.

A brief demo of both the software’s were in motion after the short lecture on the basics of CAD.  Questions and queries from students were also entertained and answered in between his demonstrations.

One of the main highlight of the event was the giving away of the free trial software for students by the speaker.  Students were able to get what they wanted and more.  They were able to learn about the most used system in practicing architecture and they would be able to hone their skills because of the free trial given by the speakers.

Once again, the event is considered to be a success.  With the Beato Angelico AVR being almost completely occupied, UAPSA-UST has done it again.

TAKE ME THERE: WILCON TOUR

Written by: Vanessa Rosaria

Wilcon Builder’s Supply was founded in 1977 in Quezon City, Manila and has since then expanded to several retail outlets within strategic locations. The company has revolutionized the construction industry and in 2003, a sister company, Wilcon Builders’ Depot was launched; creating convenience shopping for its customers through its air-conditioned shops, delivery service, and commitment to excellent service.

Even though we can easily access Wilcon depot in any of their branches, we still made a trip there to feel and learn more about materials for the Building Techniques Subject of the second year students of Architecture.

The United Architects of the Philippines – Student Auxiliary organized another chapter activity entitled Take Me There: Wilcon Depot that took its place at the Wilcon Depot, 90 E. Rodriguez Jr., Avenue Libis Quezon City last February 9, 2012.

The students gathered in the UST grounds early morning then left at 8:30 in the morning to the site. When the students got there, they are welcomed by a big banner on the entrance and representatives of the depot escorted them to multi-purpose hall for the opening program and welcome remarks.

The representatives gave an introduction and explained few things regarding Wilcon Depot. All were given snacks and flyers afterwards and were free to explore the whole depot on their own and are free to ask any staff regarding any matter. Some were guided by some representatives and explained each product in the place to them.

Accompanying the students were BT professors Archt. Joey Saguidan, Archt. Henry Herrera, Archt.Bernadette Delos Reyes and Archt. Leah Martin. Each professor guided the students and lectured about the BT subject while taking advantage that they are practically personally seeing the materials.

After some time, everyone was called by the Public Announcement Team of Wilcon Depot to gather near the entrance for Photo Opportunity, giving of give-away and giving the certificate. Everyone was happy for the Wilcon’s give-away notebooks and pens because they will be able to use it.

By the time it was after noon, everyone was back at UST, was given their lunch and distributed their certificates.
